EDIT: Update... Not only did the changes fix the issue with the trap, the thing works marvelously once you do. As of this morning, 9 Skunks caught. Couple of tips:
1) Cover the holes at the end by the trigger plate with tape. I had either a mouse or an inventive skunk stick their paw through the hole to get to the bait.
2) Don't bother with peanut butter on bread for a skunk. Put straight peanut butter on the trigger plate as far back toward the vertical action rod as you can. Leave the bread for sandwiches.
Using that method, I've gotten 7 out of 8 straight nights.
Okay, I figured, some Jackweed must've captured a pest and then returned the trap to the company, which then shipped it off to me to fulfill my order. (I don't know that actually happened, but it's what I came up with after the experiences that followed.)
The trigger mechanism seemed really difficult and stubborn to trigger, but the scant instruction sheet offered no help, so I went ahead and baited the trap and set it out. In the morning, the bait was gone, but the only thing inside the trap were a few black and white hairs that had been left behind by my uncaptured quarry. The door sat wide open, as if the trap were laughing at me.
For three more nights I suffered the indignity of being an incompetent trapper, but I'm sure Mr. Skunk was fat and happy after finding four regular full meals just a few feet away from its den.
I finally tested the trap with a stick, placing pressure on the trigger plate. It took probably 20 or so pounds of force to set the thing off. Obviously defective.
After removing the back plate to see whether the sensitivity could be adjusted (again, the lack of instructions about the trap was absolutely infuriating), I discovered that the threading on part of the trigger mechanism was totally stripped out, so even if some amount of adjustment were possible, it wouldn't matter. So the trap was obviously defective, and probably had been returned and re-sold; either that or the manufacturer's or seller's quality control processes were lacking.
Worse than all of this, however, was that I had squandered a week of fruitful trapping and was unsuccessful because the trap didn't work in the first place—something I couldn't have known going in because of the lousy instructions.
Anyway, I opted to return it. That process was convoluted and took almost two weeks to accomplish. More time wasted!
I hope no one receives my defective trap as a resale item, but I'll never know, and apparently, neither will you.
Sadly, I cannot recommend this trap nor this vendor.
Noticed some of the rivets at the entry were broke, so figure that may have something to do with it. Fixed those and set out again. Same thing happened. We had pretty good luck with regular traps, but ours broke, so we decided to try something different. Again, we get the concept, but never worked for us. Bought some regular traps again and got two skunks the first night. Ended up returning it.
