I used the JT Eaton poison bait blocks in conjunction with some hair-triggered mouse traps to kill/catch what ultimately turned out to be one large rat, a smaller rat, and a small field mouse in my garage.
For weeks I heard rustling in the corner of my garage and ultimately discovered the invaders had eaten through an entire bag of bird feed. I got rid of the bird feed, but it seemed they had set up camp and simply were waiting for the next delivery. The noise continued despite no food in sight.
I set out 6 traps, all in the area where the bird feed was, and I put broken up chunks of this bait on each trap, with some additional bait crumbs around the traps, and several whole bait blocks surrounding the traps. I counted out the exposed bait and sealing and hiding the main bucket elsewhere, leaving 10 for the invaders.
Hilariously, they ate all the loose and whole bait blocks the first night (10 total) and didn't trip a single trap. The second night, they ate another 10 bait blocks, and tripped a couple of traps, but I didn't catch anything and I wondered if they'd end up dead and smelling somewhere. The third night, they ate 7 more bait blocks, leaving three whole and uneaten, and tripping a couple more of the traps, all of which had been reset. The fourth night I caught a monster! He was a solid foot long and his head was caught in a trap, and their were just a couple of bait blocks missing. On the one hand, this was sad; on the other hand, I felt a distinct sense of vindication.
I reset the traps and put out a full 10 count of bait blocks again, and left the arrangement, not knowing if I had a lone wolf scenario or a sleeper cell of killer rats. Each of a couple more nights, the traps were jostled and some tripped, with a couple of bait blocks missing, and then maybe 3 nights later, I caught another rat, but smaller than the first.
I left the poison and traps out, but it was quiet and un-disturbed for a long time, but a couple of weeks later, I caught a tiny field mouse. That was almost 3 months ago, and its been blissfully silent since, despite there still being poison and traps set and ready for the taking.
I cannot say for sure if any of the rats or mice died away from the traps. But what I can say for certain is the combo of poison and traps worked perfectly, I have no more noise in the garage and there was never a smell of decaying rats, so my very best guess is that the poison weakened the group considerably until the leader Godzilla rat was flung into the traps by his followers in a rat-mutiny, leaving a power vacuum and political unrest amongst the surviving field mouse and smaller rat, with the sneaky field mouse then killing the smaller rat through underhanded treachery, before succumbing to health problems herself, brought about by the combination of the poison and the lack of access to affordable healthcare, ultimately resulting in the early and untimely death of the field mouse.
I hope that helps!

They do not tend to jump on and devour whatever poison du jour you have to offer. Instead, they will wait a few days until your scent has worn off. Then a handful of them (probably the younger ones) will venture forth and take a nibble or two while the rest of the gang sits back and watches. When those adventuresome few soon grow ill followed shortly after by their death? All the other rats will immediately stop eating the poison and from then on, your traps will have become useless.
I learned this the hard way having built and operated a chicken coop with thirty some chickens in it for several years. The rats soon moved into the coop, building tunnels and nests beneath the dirt floor. At night, they would emerge and help themselves to whatever grain the chickens had left them. In certain instances, when we would add baby chicks to the coop to try and increase our laying hen population, they would pounce on and devour the baby chicks.
Over the years I fought and lost rat wars with those bastards using mechanical traps (all failed) and poison (also failed). The reasons for the failure are mentioned above. Rats as a population are very skeptical of anything new that comes into their environment - like traps. Once a few of their ilk venture forth to investigate and end up paying with their lives, the rest of the population will take heed and steer clear.
What that means, in a nutshell, is that whatever method you choose to wipe out a rat infestation you have one shot and one shot only at ridding yourself of the problem - and that is by convincing the entire population to indulge themselves in your poisonous offerings all at once. Kill them all in short order or expect the survivors to learn from their peers mistakes and studiously avoid your traps from then on. Meanwhile, those survivors will go right back to breeding and multiplying and it will only be a matter of time before you're overrun with rats once again.
Which brings me to why this JT Eaton 709-PN Bait Block is the way to go.
After having a seriously rat infested chicken coop for over thirty years we finally decided we'd had enough of trying to raise our own chickens and got rid of the entire setup. What we didn't get rid of were the rats. Once the coop and their food supply was gone - they migrated a couple hundred yards up the hill and into our home. We discovered this when food items in our pantry were suddenly showing multiple signs of rat gnawing s and depredation. There were also visible signs of live rats running about when the lights were turned on.
I ordered JT Eaton 709-PN Bait Block and a dozen traps to hold the poison and set about to go back to war again. Because this time I knew that it was all or nothing. A dozen traps may seem like overkill but, they and this marvelous rat killing bait did the trick. The ENTIRE rat population was wiped out!! This was over a year ago now and we haven't seen hide nor hair of a single rat in our home since! This stuff works!!
Just remember - if you want to kill off a rat infestation - you have to kill them ALL AT ONCE (no survivors). So put out plenty of traps filled with this bait place them all around the area of the infestation and you won't be disappointed - we certainly weren't.
I know it's a little gross because you will straight up just find a dead mouse in the middle of your floor sometimes. But its the only thing that works I swear. and it WORKS
