The last couple of years, we've had a small, quiet nest growing under our driveway. I've never seen them leave the nest farther than a couple of inches from the entrance. I have never seen a trail, but then again, I'm not sure what kind of ants they are. They're bigger than the usual fare I've dealt with in the past, and they have some truly monstrous members that I've seen wandering around a couple of times (like 1/3 inch long beasts). I've not been sure what to expect from these buggers, but I learned that they are more violently defensive of their nest than I've seen in other species of local ants when I placed some Terro ant stakes near them. Unfortunately, they never took the bait. This had never happened to me before.
From this experience, I did some research. I learned that ants have different nutritional requirements depending on season and nest development. Sometimes sugar-based baits (such as Terro) work like a charm. Other times, a protein-based bait will do the trick. I've never had to use protein-based bait before...
...until today! I got Advance 375a delivered this afternoon, and sprinkled a small amount near the opening to the nest. They took it!! So I found other openings to the nest, and sprinkled some more. Snatched up and taken inside!! I spread a little more through the openings and they've been coming out in droves for the granules. I've never seen such voracious ants. I have high hopes for this product, and I will update my review with the end result when I can!
********* UPDATE ***********
My product was delivered and applied on May 24. I'm updating this on June 9, just a little over 2 weeks after first application.
The ants kept taking the bait each time I applied it, but about a week in, they started spending more time spread out over the driveway. Huge winged ants kept coming out, but so were dead ants, brought out and disposed of by the colony. Some of the winged ants were dead, too. A chunk of the ants apparently broke off from the main driveway colony and migrated to the backyard one night. They hadn't built a new nest, but I made sure to apply more bait where they looked like they were settling. Now that it's been about 2 weeks, I've not seen much activity like before in either location, with the exception of new dead ants being brought out of the driveway. I wound up using the whole container of bait for my issue, but I think it's worked! I have another one on hand for the remaining ants.
My final determination: it takes time and many applications to fill the ants' food stores, but it's absolutely worth buying if your ants aren't taking sugar-based baits.
I had a crazy Carpenter ant infestation coming from I guess the ground from my kitchen plumbing a few years ago and learned way more about ants than I ever wanted. Ant nests go between gathering sweet or savory/fats depending on what's lacking. This has a very fishy odor so I would alternate this and Terro liquid (sugar based) baits. It took a couple weeks to completely eradicate them since it was a huge nest, but this was generally the fav over the Terro baits.
I kept getting attacked by red ants while pruning my rose bushes so just got a new bottle. It's disturbing how many ants appeared once I sprinkled it around the garden (see video). I'll check in on them tomorrow, but have faith that this will take care of the problem within a few days
