#1 You have to CONSTANTLY shake the sprayer if you put it in a tank sprayer. The product tell you that it will NOT stay mixed so you have to CONSTANTLY shake the sprayer if your put it in a tank sprayer.
#2 It TEMPORARILY TOP kills Bermuda grass. NOT EVEN ROUND UP PERMANENTLY KILLS BERMUDA GRASS. The roots have rhizomes which even with repeated applications (five applications over 3 months, and some of it still came back) of Round Up do not completely die. The DIFFERENCE is if you spray this product on the lawn it top kills the Bermuda grass and not your lawn grass.
#3 IF you have Bermuda grass starting, you can spray this product every three weeks to top kill the Bermuda grass, and cut your lawn at the recommend 2.5 to 3.5 inches (3.5 is better) so that the taller Bluegrass can starve the lower growing Bermuda grass out over time. The problem is you will ALWAYS have to watch for Bermuda grass, because nothing kills it. YOU HAVE TO KEEP AHEAD OF THE BERMUDA GRASS.
#4 IF the Bermuda grass is TOO THICK and you spray it, it kills the Bermuda grass and you have a brown lawn. IF the If you re-seed, when you spray this product on young grass, it will kill that too. IF Bermuda grass has already choked out your bluegrass, the only way I know of restoring a blue grass lawn is to spray the lawn with round up, several times until everything is dead, dead, dead. Then you will probably have to put biodegradable soap on your lawn and water it a lot to get rid to roundup residue. (This happens when you put REPEATED applications of Round Up on) Then cut out the old sod and RE-Sod your lawn. This restores the bluegrass BUT you will have to watch the lawn closely because the Bermuda grass WILL return. WHEN it does you use this to product to keep top killing the Bermuda grass and keep it under control. HOWEVER if you let the Bermuda grass get ahead of you, you have to again kill and resod your lawn.
Do not believe the “using the sun” to kill it. After I Round Uped the lawn, I had 1/8 steel plate that I put over the dead lawn, and left it there for over a month. The steel was so hot that you could not touch it. Guess what, after reseeding the lawn, some of the Bermuda is still coming back!!
So YES this product will TEMPORARILY TOP KILL Bermuda grass in your lawn IF you apply it correctly, IF apply it religiously every three weeks, and IF you cut your bluegrass at 3.5 inches long and ONLY IF you have enough bluegrass/fescue to be thick enough to choke out the Bermuda grass.
Bottom line is Bermuda grass sucks and you cannot get rid of it. If you have enough lawn grass you can control it to the point where there is none, but eventually it will be back.
I have used ThistleDown by Monterey and Turflon Ester, just like ThistleDown, performs better than expected. Turflon Ester is made for broadleaf weeds and does an amazing job. I have been using it on Broom, poison oak, milk thistle, some wild blackberry, and mullein and it has been effective in all cases. They have all shown the early effects of application in no more then two days although it takes longer for their total demise.
Doing the math, it looks expensive at $35 for 8 ounces, but it is VERY AFFORDABLE. I mix about 5cc per gallon which is at the higher end of the recommended rate. It takes about 20cc to make four gallons for my backpack sprayer. That's only $0.70 a gallon! The 32 ounce size is only $0.57 per gallon.
My actual price per use is a bit higher because I also add MONTERREY HERBICIDE HELPER which is a wetting solution to help it "stick" by cutting surface tension, and I add about one-half ounce of "TURF MARKER" per gallon. it is a VERY blue dye so I can see where I have applied the product. The dye fades after a day or two. Wear gloves when using all these products, but the dye is highly concentrated, and unless you want to look like you have Smurf hands, wear gloves!
To measure accurately I use some 20cc disposable syringes.
Most landscapers say that the best time to treat wild violets is either early spring or late fall. However, I have made multiple visits to the same wild violets and can see that it takes multiple applications if you are going to apply it during the summer.
