If they get into your house, it's all hands on deck, do what you need to to get rid of them - fast. Bait and traps in the attic and basement, other places iwhere you find rat sign. They can do a tremendous amount of damage. Get into walls, hvac eqiupment. ducts, chew through wires, etc.
I resisted baiting and tried other things but relented when there seemed to be no solution short of maintaining a small population of outdoor semi-feral cats. I tried two different baits but this is the one they seem to prefer. Adding a few drops of peanut oil or a liquid rat attractant into the shaft/rod support hole may help.
A few weeks after putting out bait stations, there's no sign of rats. No droppings, no night sightings. I assume they feed and then go back to their rat lairs and die. Good riddance, good bait. I still keep two electronic traps in my garage so I have a 'canary in the coal mine' but so far, no kills, no false alerts.
Suggestions:
Placement of the bait station is critical. I have one bait station in a tight space between a fence and shed and another in a dark and sheltered space in the corner of a fence line by my garbage cans. They feed from those the most. I tried one along a semi exposed area on the side and back of my house but no luck. As apparently effective as this bait is, it won't work if the rats won't risk exposure to get to it.
If your property is between where the rats nest and a food source, even a bait station is unlikely to help much. Best to look into what they might be feeding on as part of a broader strategy to get rid of rats. Food left outside, certain berry trees, water sources, spill-over from bird feeders, etc.
Rats are prey animals and have a highly developed survival instinct. It's unlikely that they'll start eating the bait immediately. If there are other food sources, it may take some time before they get used to seeing the bait station, identify it as a non-threat, start using it. I'd suggest setting up the bait station and being patient. At least a week before giving up and trying another location.
In my case, the rats transit along the middle cross tie of a privacy fence towards a neighbor's house. This is an area I can see clearly from my garage and from inside my house through a window given that I have a security light aimed in the general direction. There seemed to be only one rat before baiting. It had a distinctive hunch and tan colored fur. Almost a week later, I saw three smaller rats in rapid succession headed along the same route. It seems other rats learned about the bait station and started using it. Rat internet. You may see a spike in rat sightings after setting up a bait station.
Lastly, given their birth rate, they're always going to be in the general vicinity. Probably the most you can hope for is to reduce the population of those that migrate to and nest closely to your house. In other words, bait stations are a maintenance solution, not a a 'once and done' solution. Unfortunately.
Good product, happy customer. Highly recommended assuming it's used responsibly, in areas and bait stations inaccessible to pets and other wild life.
This rodent rat bait seemed to be the answer based on the number of positive reviews.
So, upon receiving a large, hefty box of bait cakes, I chopped one up using a screwdriver and placed it in a Chinese take-out dinner plastic container that I placed in the corner of my garage. I was very careful to wear gloves during the handling of the bait as you don't want to get your scent on it or the mice won't be attracted.
I have to say, at first I thought these cake blocks were completely ineffective. Yes, the mice came and were eating what I had prepared. However, they kept coming for weeks and I kept chopping up new blocks to put out for them. I was under the impression that they were enjoying the bait and it was only serving to fatten them up rather than terminate.
However, almost two months after starting the feeding routine, I saw that the bait was no longer being eaten. Shortly thereafter I found a dead mouse near the feeding station. It was apparent that I had played a rather long game trying to kill these rodents but that it had finally paid off.
So, my advice is to give this some time to work. In doing so, I am hoping you are as rewarded the way I was.
