The Two-Step Method
What is the Two-Step Method?
The expert-recommended Two-Step Method to fire ant control is one of the best proven approaches to effectively manage fire ants, which involves broadcasting a bait over your entire yard and then treating individual mounds with granules.
- Step 1: Broadcast AMDRO Kills Fire Ants Yard Treatment Bait over the entire yard to kill the colony in both the hidden and visible mounds, as well as for season long control.
- Step 2: Target individual "problem" mounds with AMDRO Kills Fire Ants Fire Ant Bait.
Why is this method so effective?
Bait is considered the best method for killing ants since bait works even when you can't find the nest. Unlike contact pesticides, bait can wipe out the entire colony by destroying the queen. Worker ants find the bait and think it's food, so they bring it back to share with the queen and the rest of the colony. Once the queen and other ants eat it, the whole mound dies.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does ant bait take to work?
Given that ant bait is intended to be disguised as food, it has a built-in delay that gives foraging ants time to take it back to the mound to share. Once the queen and other ants eat it, the whole mound dies. Typically, the bait will begin to kill the queen within one week of application and will kill the colony within two weeks of application.
Is AMDRO safe to use around livestock?
After applying AMDRO Kills Ants Fire Ant Yard Treatment Bait and AMDRO Fire Ant Bait we recommend that you do not graze or feed treated lawn or sod clippings to livestock.
IS AMDRO safe to use around pets?
While instructions vary by product, it is recommended that you do not apply the product while pets are in the treatment area. However, you can let your pets back onto treated areas once the dust has settled.
Why is fire ant bait better than a contact killer?
Bait is considered to be a more effective method of killing fire ants, as opposed to contact killers, because ants will share the bait with the queen and other ants, killing the entire colony. Once the queen and other ants eat it, the whole mound dies. Alternatively, contact killers will only kill fire ants that come into direct contact with the product.
Where are fire ants typically located?
The heaviest concentrations of fire ants are found in the South. However, fire ants can also be found in the following states: CA, NV, AZ, NM, TX, OK, MO, AR, LA, MS, TN, KY, GA, AL, FL, SC, NC and VA.
Do you have to water in the AMDRO Fire Ant Bait?
No, there is no need to water in the product. The product will actually go rancid when wet. Therefore, for best results we recommend not using AMDRO Fire Ant Bait during periods of rain.

Customer Review: First application.
Lisa C Heatherly
Product Description
AMDRO Fire Ant Bait is the original fire ant killer. It kills visible and hidden fire ant mounds fast. Once you distribute a circle of bait around the mound, the worker fire ants carry it back to the colony to share it with the queen. After the queen eats it and dies, her colony dies with her. The granules are designed for individual mound treatment but can also be used for broadcast application in outdoor areas for total fire ant control. AMDRO Fire Ant Bait kills fire ants, bigheaded ants, and harvester ants.

The options give me a thing asking about flavor...gonna be honest, I avoided testing the flavor. But the ants seem keen on it, so I'm sure the flavor is good if you're an ant. If not, your pallet is probably more sophisticated than theirs. Don't do it.
On our 10 acres in Northern Nevada we had at least 100 mounds; many may belong to the same colony. And over the last year I found my attempts mildly amusing and educating. And then one of the little red devils bit me! While I was inspecting my HONEY BEE HIVES no less! Never been stung by the honey bees. But the ant? Crawled up my leg and got the back of my calf and my subsequent reaction was ridiculous. Huge purple swollen welt for a week plus really sore muscles in my leg. The ants, I decided, must die.
I've read all the studies by the various universities on both commercial and home made methods for controlling fire ants. And since I had not yet resolved to become skilled at handling molten wax or metal...or in adding guinea fowl (who WILL EAT fire ants) to my farm (I already have ducks and chickens who mostly WILL NOT EAT fire ants)...I gave in and tried this stuff.
Had it not worked, I would next do concentrated orange peel oil which would be organic BUT potentially kill some of my honeybees.
1 2# box let me treat all 30 of my trial mounds (the ones in and around the areas of the property we frequent most). 2 days later...I still had ants. I wrote the product off, pretty irritated considering it was supposed to be effective.
Another 2 days later...they were all DEAD. Every single mound I treated...dead. YAY!!!
Ordering more because ants from the mounds I didn't treat and imposing in on the now ant-free zone. So, clearly this is not a long term solution. The extent of poison I would have to cover our place with would be ridiculous and eventually the ants would evolve to tolerate it anyway. Back to the drawing board! For now, it gives us some piece of mind and some buffer from them establishing where we work the most.
