Catches fleas effectively and naturally and our cat loves it

Catches fleas effectively and naturally and our cat loves it
This normal-looking comb has the teeth spaced just right to catch fleas as you comb. It does a little better than just picking them up, it usually traps their legs so they can't jump off the comb easily.I bring along a zip loc bag when I comb our cat, that way when I catch a flea I toss the comb quickly into the bag to trap it. Once it comes off the comb I can pinch it in the bag with my nail. The pictures included show a few fleas I've recently caught this way. When I first got this I'd get 1 or 2 fleas every combing, now I am down to catching 1 every few times I comb her. Our cat seems like she had a few dozen fleas, so if you comb your cat once a day under typical conditions you'll probably deflea her in a few weeks this way. Though in one occasion I picked out 11 fleas. The best thing is, our cat loves the comb. She rubs up against it happily, and purrs loud enough for the neighbors to hear, so it's fun to comb her. This is a really clean and natural way to keep fleas at bay. It only takes a few minutes a day, and you were probably going to pet your cat for more than that each day anyway. Just leave the comb and sandwich bag in easy reach.Tips: - The back of the neck and just behind the ears are favorite locations for fleas. Our cat also gets rather calm when you comb the back of her neck, so win-win. - Under the chin and the side of her face are the other favorites. - Our cat also likes to scratch her face on the comb, it works well if you run the comb over her whiskers on the side of the face, don't try to go under the whiskers, just comb right over the whiskers and it's comfy for the cat. - It probably goes without saying that you want to point the teeth of the comb in the direction you're combing to lift the fleas up and out. - Let some fur build up on the comb, when you catch a flea on the comb they will usually b-line it to the fur on the comb making it easy to transport them to the plastic bag.Update: I've now owned this comb for 1.5 years. A few weeks after writing this review I completely eliminated all fleas on my cat, we used the comb only sporadically for nearly a year, never finding a flea. Recently she's caught some new fleas just from being outside so I've begun combing her daily again, each time I catch 2-3 fleas. I think it's safe to say that you can expect to fully de-flea your cat with daily combings after a few weeks plus or minus a little. Initially, you'll catch the larger adult fleas. After a week or so you'll start catching smaller newly-hatched fleas. It feels like you need to work through about 3 generations over a few weeks to fully eliminate the fleas and eggs.

A review from Mrs. L-

First of all, we do not nor have we ever had fleas in our home. We are not fans of chemical flea and tick products and won't use them.

This review is for the Safari Flea comb W6161 double row flea comb and also for the W560 NCL00 single row flea comb. I purchased both this year. I use the double row flea comb on all dogs and one cat. It is easier to comb through the coat of a Great Pyrenees where the single row flea comb will not budge on the coat of a Pyr. The double row flea comb removes debris, but not all dry skin flakes that may rest on the top layer of a dog's skin. It does a good job but is not totally perfect. And I don't expect it to be perfect. The double row flea comb is well tolerated by our longer haired "fluffy" cat. And it does a good job of removing hair that is shedding and thereby reduces cat hair balls.

After I have used the double row flea comb on the two smaller dogs and the cat, then I go back with the single row flea comb and give a good comb out. It removes shedding dog and cat hairs and dry, flaky skin as well as small debris. By helping to keep their coat and skin clean and debris free, their coat and skin stays healthier.

One of our rescue dogs is a small to medium sized dog with tight curly hair. When we first got her she was loaded with fleas coming from a home where she stayed outside all of the time. I used this style of flea comb and worked on her coat for about an hour. It was energy and time consuming because she was so infested with fleas. I had to comb through her coat. Carefully lift the comb towards a jar with hot soapy water. Swish the comb through the water to remove live fleas and egg debris (which looked like crusty black dots), Dry the comb with a paper towels and start over. I did all of this outside with my husband holding and petting this poor dog. But, within an hour, I seemed to have gotten most of the fleas and debris off of this dog. It is important to comb out the flea eggs also. And, we did this procedure outside! Then we gave her a gentle bath with a very, very very light diluted solution of Dawn dish detergent. Rinsed well and dried her off with towels Everyday, for a few weeks, I combed her out with these flea combs. First the double row and then the single row. We never again had a problem with fleas on her ever. And she is an adorable, sweet, happy dog who loves to be combed out. She is such an asset to our family.

Both combs are excellent at doing the job for which they are designed. I think that using these types of flea combs have successfully prevented us from having any type of flea problem EVER with the dogs or cats. I think it has also prevented us from using neurotoxic tick and flea sprays, collars or powders with our pets.

I use this gently to remove some of the undercoat on my black lab who sheds like there's no tomorrow. I go very slowly and it doesn't seem to bother her in the slightest. It has helped quite a bit with the shedding. And I believe its teeth are tight enough to capture any fleas, if there were any.

If you've treated your yard, your house, washed all of your bed linens and cat bed, and treated your cat, whether naturally or went the chemical route (sometimes it's the best solution), adding into the lot you need to physically and mechanically remove fleas/eggs as a suggested part of the protocol. Vacuuming everything, everywhere, every day and also use this handy little comb. It's fantastic. I've had acreage, many dogs and cats and never had a flea infestation since back in the 70 & 80's where we used harsh chemical means to control fleas/ticks before the spot-on products were developed. Until now. We moved into a house that was infested! We had no idea. Our poor little cat became inundated. We did a combo of natural (baking soda and salt) and chemical (chemical sprays for carpets). He was already on a spot-on treatment- but there was an outbreak that needed help. So after treatments, we vacuumed every. single. day. And twice a day I used this comb on our kitty. It's fantastic! Perfect for his medium length coat.

Setup: Be methodical. Don't skip a day. This works. Lay out a light colored bed sheet or large light colored towels on the floor. You will sit on this with your cat as you do this. I lean against a wall to help with support of my back, cat between my legs. You may need someone to help you hold the cat. The light colored fabric will allow you to see any fleas that will make a jump for it! They are fast! Use your fingers or a tissue to pick them up and plunk them into the water or a ball them up into a trash can beside you. A medium bowl in white or clear glass so you can see the fleas. Fill with water and liquid soap, swish around. Several Q-tips. Plus a few facial tissues and a small trash can (for hair and escaped fleas you catch with a tissue). Start at the head and neck of your cat and slowly draw the comb through in short strokes. Check the comb quickly and using your thumb, push any fleas into the water that is beside you. If a flea gets stuck in the comb, use a Q-tip to scrape it off. The fleas stick to the Q-tip and I just drop it all into the water.

Keep going from head to tail. When you run out of fleas, turn the cat on its side. One side then the other. Then the cat on it's back, starting at the head/throat. Run out of fleas to catch? Good! Now start over until you get no more fleas. They will run from the comb to other parts the cat's body. Don't forget the legs and tail. Go slow so you don't accidentally catch the edge of your cat's skin. I then throw the Q-tips in the trash and flush the bowl of fleas down the toilet. Scoop up the light colored towels/bed sheet you were sitting on and place it straight into the washer. Change your clothes and put them right into the washer. Take the trash out. Now, vacuum the area. I also vacuum up some salt and baking soda into the vacuum to help with what it catches. Change the vacuum bag or empty the cannister. Do this twice a day, every day until you find no more fleas on your cat. Also, don't fret if a flea escapes. Just say out loud, "That's fine, I'm going to vacuum you up in a few minutes, you cannot escape!

Note: You must treat all areas at the same time, from your house to your cat. Don't forget under beds and furniture. Vacuum your whole place every day! It's a PITA but it works. And in my case? Next time we move into a new house, we will have it treated for fleas ourselves whether or not they said it was done. Ugh. Lesson learned. Additionally, you probably won't have fleas, but after removing them and watching them die in the water/soap solution, you will think every itch on your body and scalp is flea! Disgusting but amazingly tough and resilient parasites.

We use Frontline to kill and prevent fleas on our pets but we adopted a pregnant cat and did not want to use chemicals on her. Instead we used this flea comb to remove her fleas. It worked fine, she didn't mind the combing and the flea would be stuck in the comb long enough for me to dip it into a bowl of water mixed with organic soap. You must do this repeatedly over time as the eggs are not removed and will hatch. When the kittens came, we used the comb to remove any fleas that had survived and found there way onto them. The comb was easy to use and comfortable to hold, seems well designed. Fleas are fast and it can be a challenge to catch them with the comb, and sometimes they jump off before you can get them into the soap bowl, so keep the bowl close to the cat. None of the cats have long hair, just short to medium, so I can only comment on that fur type. I can see it being useful later, too. Even on meds, fleas can hop a ride on your dogs legs and make it into your home, so this is a good thing to have in your pet grooming tool bag.
