I have quite a few inside plants and the ones I recently purchased from a nursey were giving me a rough time with the gnats. I still have some but the amount of them is significantly reduced. I did not realize when I purchased them they are sticky on both sides. This is an added feature to me as you get more use out of the trap. I gave the traps a 4 for Ease of use because they will stick to your fingers and there's not really an easy way to get the trap situated in the holder without getting some adhesive to your fingers - no matter how hard you try not to. The traps are very easy to set up as far as placement in your plant pot. I do recommend as the instructions state to disturb the dirt occasionally to ensure you're ridding the plant of as many gnats as possible.
Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2024
Several of the gnats walked on the sticky surface of the traps without getting stuck. It was frustrating to watch them continue to roam freely, completely unaffected by the supposedly strong adhesive. I even tried repositioning the traps to ensure they were properly placed up but to no avail.
Not only did the flies not get trapped, but the sticky residue on the traps also made it difficult to handle t without getting the adhesive all over my fingers. The stakes had weak pinchers so the tabs kept falling out and sticking to the plants.
I ended up repotting my plants, which resolved the gnat problem.
I do however like this style of trap better than the big butterfly looking sticky traps. More discreet. I put one in each pot and that tells me where the gnats are. Then I go and remove the trap, spray the plant with gnat spray, and put in a new sticky. I also have one of those purple light suction traps going all the time. I did try mosquito bits and neem oil. Very messy. This is much easier and tidier.
Note that you have to bend the sticky traps into place, which is a pain and they often spring right out of the trap if you don't press them together firmly. Quick Tip! Don't bother bending at all, just cut them in half to get double the stickies, and no worries of a tense sticky trap flying at you!
Remember, easy on watering your plants if you want the bugs to go away.
Second, these are a misery to deal with. You don't need a huge awkward strip that must be folded to fit into the little slot on the flimsy little stake (which will coat your fingers with glue in the process) - cut this in half first and perhaps that will prevent it from constantly flinging open, falling out of the too large slot, and getting stuck on everything - including your plant's leaves, which you might tear trying to get the tape off. The dual sided tape ensures it will be stuck to your fingers and get glue residue on them every time you touch it. And it requires too much struggling with to fold it and get it to stay put in the uncooperative slot.
Third observation - it will attract and capture fungus gnats when placed in an infected plant. However, there are likely far less annoying options out there. To try to make these more acceptable to use, I would cut the strip in half and not remove the protective backing, and put only a small square or even several squares down into the soil instead. The stakes and essentially useless.
Unless you handle the sheets by the edge and place them carefully, they will stick to your fingers and be difficult to let go of.
