I help with TNR efforts for population control among the community cats and trying to rent a trap from the humane societies was impossible. The traps were always rented out at all 3 locations and I needed the trap on very specific days. I couldn't be on a waiting list because I can only trap the ferals at night when they stop by. I have a day and night job so my schedule is busy and free time is limited. With it being so cold in Minnesota (especially right now!!) I won't allow myself for an animal to be trapped overnight. I want to take the animal inside within 15 minutes of being trapped. Because of that I can only trap on the one or two days I'm not scheduled for the night job.
Anyways because of the inconsistency of my jobs it was just a smarter and hassle free decision to buy a trap and this is absolutely the best trap for my basic TNR requirements/needs!
Some suggestions:
The trap I received was an entirely wire grid device. Older photos show a solid sheet metal closing door.
Several of the clips from critical places had not been installed and were rattling about in the box. In particular, one of two clips that holds the
trap door to the roof of the trap had to be installed or substituted for with wire. These clips are not the sturdiest. One escapee pulled one loose.
I found that it took some practice to set the trap to have a just so sensitivity, and a little bending of the spring catch. It's not complicated, but plan on practicing. Furthermore, desperate animals will dig up enough soil to cover many important joints, so there is need for cleaning and oiling to keep the mechanism working properly. Snow or soil underneath the trap lever will prevent closure.
I also found that the rear door closure with a large clip and a metal rod is not adequate. A small, determined animal can escape. I simply added a piece of telephone wire to hold the rear door to the roof of the trap securely.
