Product Description
Starbar 14680 captivator fly trap attracts flies with its patented food and sex attractant. Flies cannot resist the lure of the captivator and fly inside, trapping themselves and leading straight to their death. It only takes minutes to set up by mixing the attractant with water. The captivator uses no insecticides or harsh chemicals, making it ideal for use around children or pets. It can be washed and reused. Holds up to two quarts of dead flies.

I would say say the trap was NOT as impressive as some of the photos in the reviews show. It did catch a good handful of flies, but nothing crazy. I swirled it, put it in hot areas. It didn't seem strong enough to attract them away from the other "attractions" in the yard, despite picking up as much pet waste as I could. they just didn't seem overly attracted to the trap.
The initial smell is not horrific, it does have a slight odor but once you walk a foot or so away you can't really smell it. I left it for about 2 weeks. The first week I watched it closely, the second week I was out of town and it was HOT 107 degrees the whole week. When I got home 3/4 of the liquid had evaporated, there were a few more flies, again, but nothing crazy.
To address the smell, I was full ready for it to smell RIPE when I got home. It didn't, it smelled maybe a little further away, but nothing like others were saying. I didn't have to hold my breath or anything. I just picked it up walked it through my house and threw it in the trash. I think the smell is really determined by how many flies are caught. Since mine didn't catch too many I don't think think the smell was that big of an issue.
I may try another different kind of trap, but I just felt like this one wasn't very effective. I really didn't feel like emptying it and reusing it even though it wasn't that bad. But I think I'm going to try the bag ones and go from there. Kinda disappointing, but at least the smell wasn't horrific.

I feel like I've committed genocide!
The only issue now is how do I empty it ready for new bait, I know it's going to stink and a lot of the flies are still alive!

Bought the trap in April and hung it from a tree. It took a while to get going but now that the warm weather is here there's a fresh layer of dead and dying flies in the trap every day. More importantly though, they're not buzzing all round the garden which means I can actually enjoy my space!
Not sure about the smell that others have commented on but ours is currently odourless. That said, we haven't had to empty it yet... Edit: OK, now that it's nearly full the smell has become apparent. It's very strong and "stinky", but it's not something that's unbearable, and still better than having flies swarming all over the garden.
I'd also advise to keep the water topped up regularly, which you can pour into one of the entrance holes in the lid. It quickly evaporates, and while it doesn't seem to reduce the effectiveness of the lure, the flies inside are lasting long enough to lay eggs and probably adding to the smell (and maggots can live in water, which isn't very nice to see!). I'm not looking forward to emptying it, but it's still worth the hassle for a usable garden.
